Composition for To Name a Mountain by Alfonso Almendros-Jaen
Over the years I have composed using different music styles, and gradually developed my own voice.
The piano
I often start composing by improvising on the piano or a keyboard and keep on playing until a movement or a sound starts to feel interesting or fitting for a certain atmosphere, a movie sequence or a passage in a film script. I experiment with contrasting approaches to composition, although the piano – with its possibilities and limitations - is a reference point.
The human voice
The voice is the language of the heart. I was trained for years as a classical singer, a baritone. When I sing, the analytical side of the composing process stays in the background. Improvising with my voice feels instinctive, animalistic and more open to subconscious impulses.
Contemporary sound design
The possibilities of modern music technology are endless. When sampling unusual sounds, rare instruments or field recordings, the feeling of having created your own sound, your own instrument, is very rewarding. It adds uniqueness and truth to the music.
The sound of an orchestra
I have written music for talented instrumentalists, vocalists, ensembles and choirs of different sizes. Virtual orchestra libraries and instruments nowadays provide a quality option, if the production budget requires this alternative. It is possible to make the sound of a real orchestra, but also to surpass the limitations of a physical orchestra. When working with this option, I bring life to the music by having at least one or two soloists and, where possible, a bigger ensemble.
